Winner of a signed copy of Simon Kernick's The Last 10 Seconds!
The winner of our fiercly competitive Simon Kernick competition is Mr P. Hurst! Actually he's the only one who got the question right. The answer of course is Tom Hickey. But you all knew that, really, right? (And the question was "What is the name of the lecturer in humanities at Brighton Polytechnic who was a major inspiration to Mr Kernick?")
So congratulations Phil, the book is in the post.
Happy reading.
Winners of signed Rushdies!
The answers to the "Signed Salman Rushdie" competition were Lewis Shiner (remember, we should all be reading him....) and Ptosis.
The lucky winners are Therese Granlund and Johan Anglemark!
Congratulations! Get in touch for desired ink.
The Finkler Question by Howard Jacobson - The Booker Prize Winner 2010
I've been reading nothing but Booker nominees for the last 8 weeks. I managed to read 8 of the 13 nominees and was lucky enough to finish the entire shortlist. It's been an interesting journey into many different worlds...

Next weekend the Uppsala shop is moving!
We have been in our current location for almost 9 years and have now outgrown them.
Sales are excellent (thanks guys!) so we feel this is now the right move for us.
But don't worry! We're not moving far, the new place is 25 meters west of the old one; it's actually in the same building but on the corner. Bigger, better, but just as nice.
The actual move will happen during next weekend, most of it during the Saturday. A lot of you have been kind enough to offer to come help out, which is really amazing of you.We do have the best customers.
If you do want to help out, let us know beforehand so we can plan for food and such.
So, wish us good luck and we rely on your forebearance as the start-up will undoubtedly be a bit messy.

Congratulations Stuart Neville!
Lots of good things are happening in Irish crime writing at present. My favourite from the 2009 crop of novels was Stuart Neville's excellent debut The Twelve (published in the US as The Ghosts of Belfast). The NY Times had it on their list of top 5 crime novels of 2009 and just a few days ago The LA Times awarded it the Best Mystery/Thriller Prize!
I heartily recommend reading this immediately!

What I Read on my Easter Vacation!
I brought four books to the south coast of Cyprus and enjoyed them all:
1. Harlan Coben - Caught. Another stand-alone thriller about the suburban soul. Perhaps not his finest, but quite thrilling and his characters are overall believable and engaging.
2. Don Winslow - Savages. Yeah! This is not actually published until June, but I was lucky and got a hold of a prepublication copy. This is great writing, political, smooth, SoCal/Mexico drug wars/philosophy. Great language, solid points made. Highly recommended. When you can find it...
3. Jonathan L Howard - Johannes Cabal the Necromancer. Good, original, English, somewhat gaimanesque, a bit quirky fantasy. Johannes sold his soul to the devil ten years ago and now he wants it back! A deal is struck, but who's fooling who? Read!
4. Karen Campbell - Shadowplay. The third novel about glaswegian police-woman Anna Cameron, this is not actually published until next month, but Karen was nice enough to present me with a sneak preview copy... These novels are so good. Anna Cameron is such an intriguing character and the writing here really shines. Great intrigue. Do not miss out on these books!

By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham
This is the story of Peter Harris, a 44 year old gallery owner in New York and what happens to him over a period of a few days.
This is a wonderful novel, a contemplation on encroaching middle age, on values, marriage, parenthood, art and ideals. The writing is exquisite, the language occasionally stunning. It surprised me, and I like being surprised.
It's astounding how much is in the 238 pages of this novel, how vivid the images are, how vibrant the characters.
Cunningham writes in a self-assured east coast tradition of Fitzgerald and Cheever. It's very erudite and empathic. Wow. Read.
His previous novel The Hours won the Pulitzer and was made into a much lauded film.
